Back To Work

When can I start doing my normal activities?

Travelling

Driving after an anaesthetic is not advisable for 24-48 hours. Your reaction time and cognition is impaired. Most insurance companies will not cover you if you have made the decision to drive. In upper airways surgery there is a risk of bleeding for 2-3 weeks.

Short trips in the car are usually safe, but I typically recommend staying within the region in case of bleeding. This means that you can access emergency care if needed. I do not advise my patients to fly, even domestically for at least 2 weeks after surgery. Bleeding whilst on a plane could be catastrophic, even if a doctor was present on board.

Working and School

I normally recommend 2-3 weeks off. Many people feel good enough to get back to fairly typical routines after 10 days, but I would encourage you to take things quietly. The risk of bleeding is still present, and you may also find that you are still low in energy.

Sports

This is normally 2-3 weeks but we can discuss your specific activities in relation to the surgery you have had. It’s often wise to wait until after your first post-op visit to assess your readiness for the gym or sportsfield.
